One of the difficulties in being a world-renowned country entertainer is how easy you are to find, especially when your whereabouts have been publicized for months on national television. Such was the case when a contingent of agents from the Nashville and Memphis offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation tracked down Toby Keith backstage at the 2005 CMT Music Awards. Thankfully, the purpose of this particular manhunt was the presentation of a commendation. FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Randy Thysse and four other Special Agents presented Toby Keith with the Exceptional Service In the Public Interest commendation, signed by FBI Director Robert S. Mueller.
During the presentation, Thysse complemented Toby for his patriotism and service to the armed forces through his USO trips to Iraq and other overseas locations. Beyond the patriotic themes found in Keith’s songs “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” and “American Soldier,” the singer/songwriter has backed up his vocalizations by visiting Iraq, Afghanistan and other military installations to show his support for the troops.
To that end, Keith’s next awards show appearance on May 17, the Academy of Country Music Awards, will feature his live performance beamed in via satellite from the Middle East. Keith is up for four awards at the show, among them Entertainer of the Year, which he has won two years in a row.
At the CMT bash, Keith took home the Hottest Video of the Year award for “Whiskey Girl.” His next album, Honky Tonk University, lands in stores May 17, and his “Honkytonk U” tour commences June 10 in Charlotte, NC. Leading up the release of the album and the ACM Music Awards, a media blitz will start with a May 13 performance on the CBS Early Show, and round out with appearances on Extra and Access Hollywood and be featured in a CMT Homecoming special. To date, Keith has sold more than 25 million albums.
