ACountry salutes Brian Egan of 98.7 WMZQ for raising over $100,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and being named DC’s Man of the Year 1st Runner-up. Brian and the 14 finalists helped raise nearly $700,000. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education, and patient services. The Society’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
The funds generated through the Man & Woman of the Year Campaign will be used towards accelerating cures for patients. Generosity of supporters has enabled The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to increase research funding 95% (from $8.6 million to $50 million) from 1995 to 2005. As a result of this increase in research funding, cure rates for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, the most common form of childhood leukemia, have increased from 4% to over 86% since the 1960s.
“We did it! You helped me make me goal,” Brian said. “I wanted to get to $98,000 and we made it! $100,829!! I want to congratulate all the other Candidates and Dr. George Bitar who won the Man of the Year and I want to salute the 2006 Woman of the Year Windy Shepherd. Together the National Capital Chapter raised nearly $700,000 well above last year’s record breaking $621,000. To Traci Schnepf and the staff at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, you guys have been great to work with over the last ten weeks! The Man of the Year competition is over but the search for cures goes on. You can still donate right now!“
“Thanks to all who contributed for being difference makers! You helped the National Capital Area Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society shatter the Man of the Year Campaign record. You helped my wife Jen, and countless others with blood cancers live to fight another day! God Bless You!”
